Council steps in to protect historic Owston Ferry pumping station

Comments Off on Council steps in to protect historic Owston Ferry pumping station

North Lincolnshire Council has stepped in to protect Owston Ferry’s historic pumping station following calls from hundreds of residents concerned about plans to demolish it.

The council has served a Building Preservation Notice on the South Street pumping station, giving the historic building immediate protection while Historic England considers formally listing it.

The move follows 235 objections to proposals to demolish part of the building, with local ward councillors supporting calls for it to be protected.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Residents in Owston Ferry have been absolutely clear that this building matters to them. We have listened, we have heard those concerns and we have acted.

“We have promised to deliver the things that matter for residents and this is another example of us keeping that promise.

“This is an important part of Owston Ferry’s history and once something like this has gone, it has gone forever. Taking action now gives Historic England the time it needs to properly consider the building’s future rather than allowing part of it to disappear in the meantime.

“Residents expect the council to stand up for their communities and protect the things that make our towns and villages distinctive. That is exactly what we are doing.”

Dating from 1910, the pumping station is understood to be a rare intact survivor of its type, retaining historic features including internal machinery. It also forms part of the Isle of Axholme Area of Special Historic Landscape Interest.

A member of the public has already applied to Historic England for the building to be formally listed. Historic England has confirmed it is progressing a full listing assessment and has supported the council’s decision to serve a Building Preservation Notice.

The notice means the building will be treated as listed meaning listed consent would be required for demolition or alterations affecting its historic character while the assessment takes place.

The council’s action prevents the proposed demolition from taking place while Historic England reaches a decision the pumping station getting permanent protection.

More face-to-face help brought into North Lincolnshire’s rural communities

Comments Off on More face-to-face help brought into North Lincolnshire’s rural communities

Residents facing financial difficulties in Barton, Brigg, Crowle, Epworth and Winterton can now get free, face-to-face advice in their own communities.

North Lincolnshire Council has chosen to invest in Citizens Advice North Lincolnshire taking weekly sessions into community hubs across the area, reducing the need for residents to travel into Scunthorpe to get help. They will be available to explain what financial help is available through the Crisis Resilience Fund for people who have suffered a financial setback.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Living outside Scunthorpe should not make it harder to get good advice when you need it.

“We have chosen to invest in taking this support directly into North Lincolnshire’s towns and rural communities, making it easier for residents to sit down with somebody locally and find a way forward.

“This is about delivering practical support close to home and ensuring communities across North Lincolnshire benefit from the services in which we invest.”

Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “This investment will give residents in rural communities regular access to trusted, specialist advice without facing an unnecessary journey.

“It will help people tackle problems earlier, understand their options and build greater security and resilience.”

Sessions are available at:

  • Barton Community Hub: Mondays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Brigg Community Hub: Fridays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Crowle Community Hub: Thursdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Epworth Community Hub: Thursdays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Winterton Community Hub: Mondays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Ashby Community Hub: Tuesdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Scunthorpe Central: Fridays, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm

The additional support forms part of the council’s Community Resilience Fund programme.

Winterton roads next as council pushes on with resurfacing work

Comments Off on Winterton roads next as council pushes on with resurfacing work

Large parts of Winterton streets will be resurfaced this autumn as the council continues work to improve roads across North Lincolnshire.

Crews are due to start on King Street, Park Street, Hart Lane and Mill House Lane on Monday 19 October, with work scheduled for completion by Friday 6 November.

Alongside the new road surfaces, they will replace kerbs where needed, adjust drains and drain covers and put road markings back in place.

The work follows improvements completed in 30 towns and villages across North Lincolnshire. The council has also filled more than 18,000 potholes, tackling smaller defects alongside more extensive work like the resurfacing planned for Winterton.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Whether it’s a pothole outside someone’s home or a street that needs a new surface, people want to see the work getting done.

“We’ve improved roads across 30 communities and filled more than 18,000 potholes. Now we’re moving ahead with a substantial programme on four streets in Winterton, because keeping the roads people rely on in good condition matters.”

Work has been completed in Ashby, Barrow, Barton, Belton, Bonby, Bottesford, Broughton, Burringham, Burton, East Halton, Epworth, Flixborough, Fockerby, Garthorpe, Gunness, Haxey, Hibaldstow, Holme, Kirmington, Kirton, Melton Ross, Messingham, Roxby, Scunthorpe, Thornton Curtis, Winterton, Wootton, Worlaby and Wrawby.

Cllr Elaine Marper, Winterton ward councillor and cabinet member for customer services, said: “King Street, Park Street, Hart Lane and Mill House Lane are used every day by people living and working in Winterton. I know road condition is something residents notice, so it’s good to see these streets included in the programme.

“There will be some disruption while the crews are working, and we’ll make sure people have the details they need before work starts.

“Once it’s finished, residents will have smoother roads that are better to use – and we’ll be moving on to the rest of the roads that need sorting in Winterton – they are coming soon.”

Stub it out this Stoptober: free support to help smokers break the habit

Comments Off on Stub it out this Stoptober: free support to help smokers break the habit

Smokers across North Lincolnshire are being challenged to give quitting a go for just 28 days this October – with free local support available to help them do it.

People who manage to stop smoking for 28 days are five times more likely to quit for good, and North Lincolnshire’s Healthy Lifestyles team is using Stoptober to encourage people to make an attempt – including those who have tried before.

Free one-to-one help is available from trained stop smoking advisors, alongside a range of aids including vapes, inhalators and stop smoking medication.

People can also get six months’ free access to the Smoke Free app, giving them round-the-clock access to advisors as well as tools to track cravings, improvements to their health and how much money they are saving.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Forget about never smoking again for a moment. Start with 28 days.

“If you smoke, giving up is one of the biggest things you can do for your health – and you don’t have to do it on your own. There is free, practical help available right here in North Lincolnshire to give you a better chance of succeeding.”

The benefits of quitting begin quickly. As the body starts to recover, people can find breathing becomes easier and their senses of taste and smell improve. Longer term, stopping smoking reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and respiratory disease.

During October, stop smoking advisors will also be out in communities so people can simply drop by for a conversation.

They will be at Scunthorpe High Street, outside Scunthorpe Central, from 10am to 3pm on 1, 8, 22 and 29 October, and at Barton Market Place, outside the Money Box, from 10am to 3pm on 15 October.

Cllr Christine Patterson, cabinet member for healthy communities, said: “If you have tried to quit before and started smoking again, that doesn’t matter. Lots of people need more than one attempt.

“What matters is having another go – and using the support that gives you the best chance of succeeding.

“You can speak to someone face-to-face, use the app or find the combination of support that works for you. Stoptober gives people a really good reason to say: this October, I’m going to give it 28 days.”

Find free stop smoking support, including access to the Smoke Free app, on the Healthy Lifestyles page on the website.

Council leader calls for banking hub in Ashby

Comments Off on Council leader calls for banking hub in Ashby

The leader of North Lincolnshire Council has called for a banking hub to be established in Ashby to serve people in Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens.

Cllr Rob Waltham has written to LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, asking for a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.

Ashby Central and Ashby Lakeside alone have a combined population of more than 16,000, with the wider catchment taking the potential population served to well over 30,000.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Ashby is a major centre serving a large and growing population, but residents and businesses no longer have access to a bank branch there.

“A banking hub would support residents, help local businesses manage cash and strengthen an already important shopping and service centre.”

The council has told LINK it is willing to provide further evidence on population, retail activity, transport links and potential locations for a hub.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member community wellbeing urban (Ashby, Bottesford and Scunthorpe) said: “We have already seen in Brigg and Barton how banking hubs can provide a practical solution when communities lose traditional bank branches.

“Ashby now deserves the same consideration. It has the population, the retail centre and the wider catchment to make a strong case for a hub of its own.”

The council already provides free parking in Ashby, making it easier for residents to access local shops and services, with hundreds of thousands of free two-hour parking sessions used each year.

Cllr Waltham added: “We have made a commitment to back independent retailers and local centres across North Lincolnshire. Free parking is part of that, and attracting services such as banking hubs is another important part of keeping places like Ashby thriving.

“We want people to be able to shop locally, use local services and support local businesses without having to travel elsewhere for essential services.”

Residents urged to back Ashby banking hub campaign

Comments Off on Residents urged to back Ashby banking hub campaign

People across Ashby and surrounding communities are being urged to back the campaign for a new banking hub.

The council has already asked LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, to carry out a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.

A hub could serve people across Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens – a potential catchment of more than 30,000 people.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We believe there is a really strong case for a banking hub in Ashby and now we want residents and businesses to help us demonstrate the level of local support.

“It takes less than a minute to add your name. The more people who back the campaign, the stronger the message we can send that people want convenient access to banking services in this part of North Lincolnshire.

“We have already seen the difference banking hubs can make in Brigg and Barton. Ashby has a large population, a busy retail centre and a wide catchment, and we want LINK to give that case serious consideration.”

Cllr Andrea Davison, ward member for Ashby, said: “We used to have banks on Ashby High Street and the problems we saw when the Post Office temporarily closed showed just how important local access to these services still is.

“Not everybody banks online and people need somewhere they can go face to face. A banking hub would make a massive difference for local residents, shoppers and businesses.”

There is currently no bank branch in Ashby. The council has argued that the area meets a number of the factors LINK considers when assessing the need for additional banking services, including population, retail activity, public transport and journey times to alternative provision.

For residents reliant on public transport, access to the remaining banking facilities in Scunthorpe town centre is already well beyond LINK’s 15-minute benchmark. A scheduled bus journey from Bottesford to Scunthorpe Bus Station, for example, takes around 25 minutes, before waiting time and the onward journey to a bank branch are taken into account.

Brigg’s banking hub has already had 4,877 residents visit this month already and transacted almost £1m since opening.

Residents and businesses can back the campaign here.

Major road resurfacing works start in Bottesford as investment in local roads continues

Comments Off on Major road resurfacing works start in Bottesford as investment in local roads continues

Work starts today (Monday 12 October) to resurface four roads in Bottesford as North Lincolnshire Council continues its programme of investment in improving roads across the area.

Bottesford Lane, Holme Hall Avenue, Charterhouse Drive and Audern Road will all benefit from resurfacing, with work expected to take around four weeks.

The improvements will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption for residents, businesses and motorists, with temporary road closures and diversions in place where necessary.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We’re getting on with improving roads right across North Lincolnshire, and these four roads in Bottesford are the latest to benefit.

“We’ve already repaired more than 18,000 potholes and delivered improvements in more than 30 towns and villages, but we know there’s more to do.

“People want better roads, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering. There will inevitably be some disruption while the work takes place, but the result will be smoother, safer roads for everyone who uses them.”

The latest investment follows a major programme of highway improvements across North Lincolnshire, with more than 18,000 potholes repaired and resurfacing work carried out in more than 30 towns and villages.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for Ashby, Bottesford and Scunthorpe, said: “I’ve been pushing to get these roads resurfaced for quite some time, so I’m delighted the work is finally getting underway.

“Some of the road surfaces have deteriorated significantly, and while repairs have been carried out previously, what they really need is proper resurfacing.

“I use these roads regularly myself, so I know the work will cause some inconvenience. I’d like to thank residents and motorists for their patience, but I’m confident the improvements will be well worth it.”

The Bottesford works form part of the council’s continuing investment in maintaining and improving the local highway network, with resurfacing schemes being delivered across North Lincolnshire.

Residents and motorists are encouraged to follow temporary signage and allow additional time for journeys while the improvements are carried out.

Local care provider backs theatre programme reaching hundreds of young people

Comments Off on Local care provider backs theatre programme reaching hundreds of young people

A programme giving North Lincolnshire residents opportunities to perform, learn new skills and build their confidence has secured new backing from Kapil Care Homes.

The local company is sponsoring Scunthorpe Theatres’ community participation programme, delivered by North Lincolnshire Council, helping to fund performances, creative projects and more opportunities for residents to get involved both on stage and in the audience.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a brilliant example of a successful local business investing directly in opportunities for North Lincolnshire residents.

“More than 200 people have already been involved in the programme, building confidence, developing new skills and experiencing everything that taking part in the arts can offer.

“Kapil Care Homes has been a generous supporter of Spotlight and this expanded partnership will help the council and Scunthorpe Theatres open up even more opportunities.”

Since being launched in 2022, the programme has supported more than 200 people to take part in the arts, including many who may not previously have had the confidence or opportunity to do so.

Alongside developing performance and creative skills, participants say the programme has helped them make friends, become more confident and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

John Davison, cabinet member for Ashby, Bottesford and Scunthorpe, said: “This sponsorship will allow us to continue creating the best possible experiences for local people over the coming months, both as performers and audience members.

“We are grateful for this generous and continued support.”

Kapil Care Homes’ support builds on its sponsorship of Spotlight, Scunthorpe Theatres’ annual celebration of local talent.

Sunil Kapil, managing director, Kapil Care Homes, said: “We are proud to continue supporting Scunthorpe Theatres and the brilliant opportunities it creates for people across North Lincolnshire.

“We have seen the confidence, enjoyment and sense of belonging that taking part can give people. Supporting the wider programme means even more residents will be able to experience those benefits, whether they are performing themselves or enjoying a show as an audience member.”

Kapil Care Homes operates three residential care homes in North Lincolnshire and has supported a range of local community initiatives.

Further details about forthcoming opportunities through Scunthorpe Theatres’ community participation programme will be announced shortly.
